Having spent the last couple of years finding their feet and sound under another name (more about that here) Jersey based trio The Tarantulips have emerged onto the scene with a new single that very much restates their aims.
While they’re known for their grunge influenced indie sound when playing live, Gush wrong foots you with a more processed sound to Jon Caws drums and is infectious with it and as the bass and guitar flow into things and the song brings to mind something of Arcade Fire along with Pixies.
Bass player Elisa Da Silva takes on lead vocals bringing a different quality to their past material with guitarist Nic Dinnie providing backing vocals that give the song a terrific sense of balance as it’s evocatively non-literal lyrics wash over you.
Despite talk of ‘eating garden peas’ the whole thing has, lyrically, a remarkably evocative feel too it that almost borders on the erotic despite it’s rather obscure imagery while the production allows fuzzy guitars to feel light and the whole thing to feel at once dense but accessible.
As soon as its wormed it’s way into your head it’s all over rather too soon, but this feels intentional making Gush a hint, or a suggestion, leaving you wanting more of The Tarantulips brand of irresistible, off kilter, indie pop.
