Citizen-X - Giant Steps EP - cover artworkFor a few years the being known only as Citizen-X has been marking out a groove both in his local scene and in the wider, if somewhat niche, world of iOS produced electronic music.

In that time he’s played most of Guernsey’s main festivals and events as well as being featured on blogs and playlists around the world while releasing a pair of full length albums, Tales To Astonish and Amazing Stories.

Now a new EP has landed, some six months on from the last album, called Giant Steps.

Across four tracks the self-described synth junkie, takes us on a journey from the darkly atmospheric to the sonically euphoric.

The opening title track sets the mood as it builds in intensity as a kind of introduction to our upcoming travels before The Power Of Ideas takes into more upbeat territory with a track that could sound great both listening on headphones or in a club setting.

In The Zone takes the trip into darker and more atmospheric territory, certainly by this point we are in deep space, before Neon Massacre, despite its intense title, ups the energy again.

As you may have guessed from some of my descriptions the music brings to mind, even without the visuals Citizen-X often employs in the live environment, a science fiction style journey to the stars complete with challenges to overcome and a satisfying resolution.

In this it has the feeling that maybe it should be soundtracking something but, in doing so, it brings the images to mind itself while its mix of electronic dance music rhythms and more subtle atmospherics makes for a nicely dynamic set of sounds.

Added to this is the technical ingenuity of using iOS devices rather than traditional synths as the instruments – which I can assure he does play like any other instruments when performing live.

This all makes the Giant Steps EP a unique but fascinating and absorbing listen that I think will reward different listeners with very different experiences, but for me it sounds like the beginning of a fine soundtrack for a sci-fi film no one’s made yet.
